Can sheared surfaces emit light ?

چکیده

We apply a new formalism to calculating emission of light from sheared dielectric surfaces. When the surfaces are smooth, the emission of light requires extreme velocities, but introducing surface roughness with short-period components reduces the extreme demands on velocity so that, for atomic-scale roughness, shear velocities as small as 104ms-' will result in light emission. Some order-of-magnitude estimates are given.

Perceived three-dimensional shape toggles perceived glow

Most surfaces reflect light from external sources, but others emit light: they glow. Glowing surfaces are often a sign of an important feature of the environment, such as a heat source or a bioluminescent life form, but we know little about how the human visual system identifies them. Previous work has shown that luminance and luminance gradients are important in glow perception [1,2]. While a ...

Lazy Sweep Ray Casting A Fast Scanline Algorithm for Rendering Irregular Grids

For the visualization of three-dimensional data, whether scalar or vector, direct volume rendering has emerged as a leading, and often preferred, method. While surface rendering method can be applied to visualize volumetric data, they require the extraction of some structure, such as isosurfaces or streamlines, which may bias the resulting visualization. In rendering volumetric data directly, w...

Physic of Laser

SUMMARY laser operate on the principle that excited atoms can be stimulated to emit photons, Resulting in a Markedly amplified light that possesses the Unique properties of coherence, Monochromacy and high Intensity. The Nature of this light allows precise alteration of tissues, primarily by photocoagulation and disruption which has been Utilized in several forms of surgery.

Using Temperature of IR Sources for Assessing Photochemical and Aphakic Retinal Hazard

Introduction Blue light is a part of the spectrum with the highest energy content, which can reach the retina. The damage that it can cause to the retina is called photochemical or blue-light retinal injury. For the retinal injury assessment of the photochemical and aphakic retinal hazards in the wavelength range of 300-700 nm, use of effective spectral radiance limits (W.m-2.sr-1) seems to be ...
